diyskateparks.net

diyskateparks.net is an archive of DIY skateparks in the USA. It documents parks created by people that serve as public recreational areas. It achieves this by using photogrammetry - creating 3d models from images taken on my smart phone. Photogrammetry was chosen due to the difficulty of capturing 3d spaces - especially skateparks - accurately using 2d photography or descriptions. Municipalities are slow to serve the people that they represent, and good third spaces are rare to come by in the United States. DIY skateparks are an example of how communities come together to create the environments that they want to have around them. Unfortunately, these parks are often destroyed once municipalities find them, and thus parks that have been painstakingly built, often out of the pockets of skaters, get razed, without any good archive of the space. This site aims to change that by creating an archive of parks where users can browse parks across the United States. This is my latest project which is in line with my artistic practice which produces critiques, commentary, and solutions to the current economic condition in the USA caused by the ruling class (big tech). This project is an extension of my practice of building DIY skateparks with my friends.
